Should Your Office Christmas Party Have a Theme?

Having a Christmas-themed office party is a matter of opinion. Some people love the Christmas spirit, while others think it is awkward. Some Christmas-themed office parties can be a good time, but if people feel out of place, it can be a bad event, so it is better to get it right. It can be a fun, memorable event, but a bad attempt can create an uncomfortable situation.

The biggest mistake when choosing a Christmas Party Theme is when it is too elaborate or strict. Choosing “Winter Wonderland” is an ideal Christmas office party theme since people can interpret it widely, while a theme such as “Characters from Christmas Literature” would be trouble.

When choosing a Christmas office party theme, consider the workplace culture. While a corporate law firm may not be as flexible as a creative agency, it can still be a fun time. For workplaces that don’t go crazy with styling, a Christmas party theme with a subtle nod can work better.Classic themes for Christmas never get old, and this is for good reasons. Take for example, “Ugly Christmas Jumper” Parties. Jumpers are quite cheap and easy to find, and, easier to get everyone to understand the task. People at the party can either go all the way with the novelty, or they can wear something just slightly festive. No one gets left out, the photos look good, and at this point it’s a tradition good enough for everyone to already have a Christmas Jumper.

The next example is, “Black Tie” or “Cocktail Attire” Events. These provide a theme without getting to restrictive. People know the dress code, they probably have something that works for it in their closet, and it is just classy enough to elevate the event without needing any extra fuss. This works especially well for events designed to be more formal, or ones that are already in a nice venue.

Lastly, Decade themed parties. These can be quite fun, with the 20s, 70s, or 80s all being eras with very recognizable and easy to dress styles. The music playlist practically creates itself for these parties, and period matching decorations can be added to create a nice atmosphere. The only risk is that someone will go all out on their attire, while others will only put in a small amount of effort creating an unbalanced ambiance.

Choosing film and TV themes can be tricky. It is best to avoid specific franchises that not everyone knows about. Examples like Hollywood Glamour or James Bond are more universally known and work better. You’ll always have someone that doesn’t watch Love Island and hasn’t seen Star Wars. It is important that they don’t get excluded from their own work party.

Your guests are looking for colors to wear and this is where color themes work well. Saying “Red and Gold” or “Silver and White” gives attendees a guide to follow without them needing to do a full costume change. They can wear whatever they have in the colors and still feel like they are part of the event. Everything from decorations and table settings to lighting can all be the same color. This means everyone can have visual cohesion without too much effort involved on their part.

These are not easy to do without the right venue and proper organization, but if done correctly, themed casino or murder mystery nights work well. As long as you have the event planned in advance they can be a great way to provide a structure for attendees and give them talking points throughout the night to help avoid losing interest.

We can channel our winter season theme around winter sports or ski lodges. Beyond being winter season oriented, this theme will work well for our diverse workplace since not everyone celebrates Christmas. Items such as cozy jumpers, mugs with wooden decorations, and warming winter drinks create a cozy atmosphere and remain inclusive. Completing the atmosphere with some Alpine-inspired food and drink along with some appropriate music will create a festive vibe for our celebration.

Once a theme has been decided, communication is key. People need time to organize outfits or mentally prepare themselves, so outreach should be done well in advance. To aid in this process, and to ensure that everyone understands the goal, photos or mood boards should be provided. Make it clear whether or not participation is mandatory to avoid any potential discomfort.

Help people avoid spending too much money by offering suggestions about where to find props that match the theme. Charity shops, supermarkets, and online stores often have a variety of seasonal merchandise. If your theme necessitates some specific items, don’t be too worried as people can always be lent items. You can bring a small selection to the event for anyone who is having difficulty sourcing them.

The best themes are those that are kept in the background as enhancements instead of the focal point of the party. Decorations and music should be present, but are not the main focus of the party. The main focus should always be on the attendees and letting everyone have a good time. If someone spends the whole night worrying about their outfit or feeling self-conscious about it, then the theme of the party becomes more of a problem than a positive addition.

People are going to have different levels of enthusiasm. Some people will be super into it, while some will do the bare minimum. That is totally fine, and people should be allowed to enjoy the party at whatever level of enthusiasm they want. The people that enjoy dressing up will have a great time, and the people that don’t, will also have a great time as they will still be allowed to participate at their comfort level. Do not do this in a way that creates competitions or prizes that will highlight people who did not participate to the same level.

People also will feel budget pressure from themes. It is not fair for someone to spend money on an outfit, or some work accessories, for a work event, and that should not be a problem that people have to deal with. Make theme ideas accessible, and make it abundantly clear that very basic interpretations of the theme are more than welcome. It also makes the theme less fun if people feel they will be judged for not spending money on an elaborate outfit.

Having a theme makes photography much more exciting. Prepare a specific area with props and backdrops and let guests take photos throughout the evening. This also gives guests something to do and creates moments that can be shared to advertise the party outside of the venue.

Some themes work better with specific events than others. For example, a more sophisticated theme will work better with a sit-down dinner, whereas playful themes are better suited for a drinks reception. Don’t try to force the theme and the event to match. Make sure you go with a theme that is suited for your event style.

Making your guests feel included in the theme will make your party much more successful. Try to choose something that is more broad so that you can also have more flexibility with how the theme can be interpreted. Give info about the theme ahead of time, and make it optional to participate. You will be much more successful if the theme is something that can add to the atmosphere of the party, rather than something that creates more stress for your guests. If you are not sure if a theme will work, you can always consider a more traditional celebration. Keeping things simple can sometimes be the more successful option.
